Abstract:
This data set includes heavy mineral data from 1509 surface sediment stations used to produce the four distribution maps shown in Figure 5-13 of Stein (2008). Heavy minerals are determined by counting particles of the heavy subfractions 32-63 µm and/or 63-125 µm (separated from the bulk sediment using sodiummetatungstate with a density of 2.83 g cm-3 or bromoform with a density of 2.89 g cm-3) under a microscope. Maps have been compiled using the Ocean Data View software (Schlitzer, 2001) and data from Naugler (1967), Naugler et al. (1974), Behrends (1999), Peregovich (1999), Levitan et al. (1996, 1999, 2005), and Andreeva (www.pangaea.de/search?q=Andreeva), Klenova (www. pangaea.de/search?q=Klenova), Kulikov (www.pangaea.de/search?q=Kulikov), and Pavlidis (www.pangaea.de/search?q=Pavlidis).
