Abstract:
Incubation experiments were carried out with Shewanella loihica and desert dust from Namibia and Mauritania to test whether dust-borne iron(III) can serve as an external electron acceptor. This dataset includes the characterization of the dust samples, as well as the results of the incubation experiments. Dust samples were collected as silty crusts from the dry riverbed of the ephemeral river Kuiseb (Namibia) and from the inland sabkha Sebkhet Chemchâm (Mauritania). The samples were loosed with a mortal and pestle and sieved through a 63 µm sieve. The <63 µm fraction was used for the characterization and incubation experiments. The dust samples were analyzed for specific surface area, total organic carbon (TOC), δ¹³C-total organic carbon, elemental composition, mineral composition and bioavailable Iron(III). Incubation experiments were conducted with the dust samples and Shewanella loihica, using lactate as the electron donor and carbon source. Two types of experiments were conducted. In the TOC experiment, the Namibian and Mauritanian dust samples , which differ in total organic carbon content, were used to test the effect of dust-associated organic carbon on the iron(III) reduction. In the labeled experiment, the Namibia dust was loaded with a 5% ¹³C-labeled Spirulina extract via adsorption. This organic matter solution is not metabolizable by S. loihica, allowing us to test whether the bacteria used dust-associated organic carbon instead of the provided lactate. Differences in iron reduction between the labeled and unlabeled dust treatment may reflect changes in the use of associated organic carbon or in iron(III) bioavailability.
