Abstract:
This dataset contains benthic foraminiferal stable carbon (d13C) and oxygen (d18O) isotope records and reconstructed bottom-water oxygen from IODP Site U1387 (36°48.32′N, 07°43.13′W; 559 m water depth), on the middle slope of the Faro Drift in the Gulf of Cadiz. The isotopes were measured on epibenthic and deep-infaunal foraminifera to quantify bottom-water oxygen and ventilation across Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 17 to 32, plus MIS 51, in the Early to Middle Pleistocene. Measurements were performed mainly at the Leibniz Laboratory (Kiel University, Germany), and partly at Erlangen-Nürnberg and MARUM (University of Bremen), on a Finnigan MAT 253 mass spectrometer coupled to a Kiel IV carbonate preparation device, values are reported relative to the Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB) standard. Bottom-water oxygen (µmol/kg) was reconstructed from the epibenthic–deep-infaunal carbon-isotope gradient (Dd13C) following Hoogakker et al. (2015). The age model for MIS 18 to 32 is based on correlation of the planktonic (d18O) record of Globigerina bulloides from Site U1387 to IODP Site U1385 (aligned to the LR04 benthic isotope stack; Lisiecki and Raymo, 2005), whereas the MIS 51 chronology is based on correlation of the benthic d18O record to IODP Site U1308. Ages are also given on the Probstack time scale (Ahn et al., 2017).
The study also includes paired stable carbon (d13C) and oxygen (d18O) isotope measurements of the deep-infaunal foraminifera Globobulimina affinis and Globobulimina turgida. Both species were measured in the same 40 samples, across Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 18 to 32 in the Early to Middle Pleistocene, in order to determine the isotopic offset between them. Mean offsets of −0.15 ‰ (d13C) and −0.20 ‰ (d18O) were found between the two species. These offsets are what let the two species be merged into the single continuous deep-infaunal record used for the isotope and oxygen datasets from this site.
