Abstract:
This dataset contains uranium/manganese (U/Mn) ratios measured on authigenic iron–manganese (Fe–Mn) oxide coatings of planktic foraminifera from IODP Site U1387 (36°48.32′N, 07°43.13′W; 559 m water depth), on the middle slope of the Faro Drift in the Gulf of Cadiz. The ratios were measured to obtain a chemical, redox-sensitive check on bottom-water oxygenation across Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 18 to 32, in the Early to Middle Pleistocene, independent of the foraminiferal fauna. The cleaned samples were dissolved in ultra-pure 2 % nitric acid and analysed on an Agilent 7500ce inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) at the Scientific and Technological Centres of the University of Barcelona (CCiT-UB), Spain. Uranium is enriched under reducing conditions whereas manganese precipitates under oxic conditions, so a higher U/Mn ratio reflects lower bottom-water oxygen (Gottschalk et al., 2016; Hu et al., 2023). The age model is based on correlation of the planktonic d18O record of Globigerina bulloides from Site U1387 to IODP Site U1385, which is aligned to the LR04 benthic isotope stack (Lisiecki and Raymo, 2005). Ages are also given on the Probstack time scale (Ahn et al., 2017). Being a qualitative proxy, the ratios track the direction of oxygenation change rather than an absolute oxygen concentration.
