Abstract:
Saturation magnetization (Ms) measurements and derived quantitative bulk magnetite concentrations (wt.%) were conducted on rock suites exhumed along the detachment faults of the Onnuri Oceanic Core Complex, Central Indian Ridge, during the 2019 and 2022 R/V ISABU dredge operations (RD1912, RD1913, RD2208). The aim was to investigate the geophysical consequences of silica-driven fluid overprinting, specifically by tracking the destabilization and destruction of magnetic carriers formed during prior serpentinization. Rock powders (0.15–0.44 g) were analyzed using a Princeton MicroMag 3900 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). Hysteresis loops were measured under a maximum applied magnetic field of 1 T to extract saturation magnetization (Ms). Magnetite weight fractions were quantified by normalizing specimen Ms values against the reference saturation magnetization of stoichiometric magnetite (92.36 Am²/kg).
