Abstract:
This dataset contains the glacier outlines of the 5th Austrian Glacier Inventory (GI5) for the years 2021-2023 as an updated version of the 3rd Austrian Glacier Inventory (GI3, Fischer et al. 2015). The outlines as Vector files in GeoJSON format are published for 20 subregions: Allgaeuer Alpen, Ankogel-/ Hochalmspitzgruppe, Dachstein, Defreggergruppe, Hochkoenig (Salzburger Kalkalpen), Glocknergruppe, Goldberggruppe (Sonnblickgruppe), Granatspitzgruppe, Karnische Alpen, Lechtaler Alpen, Oetztaler Alpen, Raetikon, Rieserfernergruppe, Samnaungruppe, Schobergruppe, Silvrettagruppe, Stubaier Alpen, Venedigergruppe, Verwallgruppe, Zillertaler Alpen. For further information on subregions we refer to the file subregions.txt. The outlines were mapped using high resolution, multi-temporal orthophotos and satellite images, hillshades and elevation change data derived from digital elevation models depending on regional data availability.
Additional in-situ data and regional knowledge from experts were incorporated in the mapping process where available. New outlines of glacial features were mapped manually using the most recent available prior outlines consistent with GI3. In cases of fragmentation, the ID number of the original glacier was maintained using multi-polygons associated with the same glacier ID number. The ice divides remain unchanged in all glacier inventories and refer back to GI 1 (Groß, Patzelt 1987). No minimum size threshold for glaciers or fragments of glaciers was applied.
In contrast to earlier glacier inventories, analysts had the option to mark glaciers or glacier fragments as vanished or vanishing. Vanished means no more evidence of ice, resulting in a exclusion from the inventory. Vanishing means the location may still contain ice but the ice extent cannot be mapped due to debris cover, snow cover, or poor image quality.
Vanished and vanishing glaciers are listed in the file vanishing_glaciers.geojson. It contains centroid coordinates of the glaciers classified as vanished or vanishing in GI5, meaning these glacier IDs are no longer included in the GI5 glacier outline files. The centroids are extracted from the GI3 outlines. A glacier consists of all fragments associated with the same ID number, i.e., can have multiple fragments. In cases where single fragments of a multi-polygon glacier are classified as vanished or vanishing, the number of fragments affected by this is incorporated in the attributes of the remaining GI5 feature.
While mapping, each individual glacier (per ID number) was assessed and categorized according to quality flags such as image quality, outline reliability, presence of debris cover and crevasses. For further information on the attributes associated with the glacier outlines we refer to metadata_inventory.txt. Additional comments were added for any special cases or to further explain uncertainties.
