Abstract:
Underwater video recordings of the benthos and accompanying oceanographic CTD data of the environment recorded during 10 wall transects down to maximum depth of 355 m in the Comau Fjord of Patagoina, Chile. A custom-built ROV (Octiluz), based on Ocean Module V8Sii ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) technology, was launched from a small boat an manually flown along 75-400 m vertical transects at an average velocity of 0.1 m/s. The device was equipped with three cameras with different perspectives: Two HD camera (Kongsberg oe14-502, 720p50) pointed forward recording stereograpic videos and a full HD network camera (OceanTools C3-30 1080p25) took isometric recordings foreward-down. Environmental data was recorded with a CTD (RBR Maestro), which included chlorophyll a, turbidity, oxygen, pH and PAR sensors, in addition to standard conductivity, temperature and pressure instruments. The global orientation with respect to magnetic north was determined with an internal IMU device. The video footage gives a comprehensive impression of the unique local cold-water ecology and particularly highlights the different composition of the prevailing communities at different depths and on changing substrates. Most of the 10 stations are repeated transects that were already carried out on in 2012 in order to analyse long-term developments.
