1772-06-13T00:00: FONDEADOS. A LAS 6:30 SALIO LA LANCHA A HACER LEÑA EN EL PARAJE DE LA ARBOLADURA AUNQUE SEPARADO DE ELLA. A LAS 7:00 LA ENSENADA DEL AGUA ESTABA CUBIERTA DE INDIOS QUE OCUPABAN LAS MONTAÑAS Y TODOS ARMADOS Y NO BAJABAN COMO ANTES HACIAN, ESTO PUSO EN SOSPECHA AL OFICIAL COMANDANTE DEL SITIO Y SE PREPARO PIDIENDO AL MISMO TIEMPO SOCORRO PORQUE EXAMINABA QUE PASABAN DE 300 HOMBRES LOS QUE LE RODEABAN. A LAS 8:00 SE OYO 1 HOMBRE QUE GRITABA Y NADABA, COMO NO TENIAN A BORDO EMBARCACION, LA LANCHA DEL COMANDANTE FUE A SU SOCORRO CON TROPA ARMADA PRESUMIENDO QUE ALGUNA DESGRACIA HABIA Y NECESITARIAN SOCORRO EN TIERRA PUES DESDE ALLI RECONOCIAN LAS MONTAÑAS CUBIERTAS DE GENTE. EL HOMBRE QUE SE SALVO NADANDO ERA DE LA LANCHA DEL CHASTRIES. ESTE DIJO QUE TODOS LOS DEMAS DE ELLA (QUE ERAN 14) HABIAN SIDO ASESINADOS, QUE AFORTUNADAMENTE EL SE HABIA DEFENDIDO TANTO CON UN HACHA QUE TENIA QUE PUDO TOMAR EL BOSQUE QUE ESTABA POR EL TRAVES DE UN RIO DE CUYA ORILLA SE ARROJO AL AGUA PROCURANDO TOMAR LA FRAGATA. ESTA LANCHA ATRACO A TIERRA SIN SOSPECHA, VIO MUCHOS INDIOS QUE NO TENIAN ARMAS Y QUE SEGÚN SU COSTUMBRE SE ECHARON A LA MAR PARA TRAERLOS A TIERRA, SE MARCHARON CON NUESTRA GENTE PARA CORTAR LEÑA Y LUEGO POCO A POCO VIO QUE EL NUMERO DE GENTE AUMENTABA Y QUE ESTABAN ARMADOS, CON TODO NO LO ESTRAÑARON POR NO SER LA PRIMERA VEZ, CUANDO DE GOLPE OYE AL COMANDANTE GRITAR QUE ME ASESINAN Y LO VE CAER MUERTO Y VIO QUE ESTABAN RODEADOS DE MAS DE 200 SALVAJES QUE LES SUJETABAN Y LUEGO LES MATABAN A GOLPES EN LA CABEZA

4Wind directiondddegWind direction (from which the wind is blowing) in whole degrees from: 1-360; 361 = calm, 362 = variable. It is not clear from many logbook entries whether the wind direction has been corrected for the magnetic variation (or declination). To avoid any misunderstanding, all winds from reports that included a valid position in the period 1750-1854 were corrected. All other wind directions are given without being corrected.

15DeclinationDecldegIt is generally accepted by the CLIWOC team that the wind directions, reported by the ships officers, were relative to the magnetic North direction. Navigators were well aware of the difference between the true and magnetic north direction, but the compasses (we assumed that the bearing-compasses were mostly used for determining the wind direction) were not always adjusted. Therefore the wind direction has to be corrected. The magnetic declination (or variation, as it is known on board ships) is given for the whole CLIWOC period (1750-1850) for every 5x5 degree square. The number was added to the wind direction to get the true wind direction.
