Abstract:
Drinkwater Sinkhole is a groundwater-fed karst lake in the northern Bahamas (Little Bahama Bank) that preserves a stratigraphic succession spanning the last 50,000 years. For seven vibracores (e.g., C11-D1, C6-D4, C7-D4, C7-D5, C8-D3, C8-D4, C9-D3), the attached database provides measurements of bulk organic matter, coarse carbonate fraction, coarse organic matter fraction, total organic carbon, carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratios, stable carbon isotope values of the bulk organic matter (δ13Corg ‰ VPDB), and a radiocarbon-based chronology. Bulk organic matter content (%) was measured at 0.5–1 cm resolution down the full length of each core using standard loss-on-ignition (Heiri et al., 2001). However, coarse carbonate and coarse organic matter (>63 µm, mg/cm³) were only measured below the fern peat lithofacies (older than ~18 ka). These parameters were quantified at ~1 cm resolution using a sieve-first loss-on-ignition procedure (van Hengstum et al., 2016). A subset of samples from each core was additionally analyzed for total organic carbon content (%), organic carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and the stable carbon isotope values of the bulk organic matter (δ13Corg ‰ VPDB). Conventional radiocarbon ages of plant macrofossils were calibrated to calendar years before present, and downcore age models were constructed using a Bayesian statistical approach (rbacon v3.5.2; Blaauw and Christen, 2011). Calibrated calendar ages (minimum, maximum, median, and mean, ka BP) are reported at each analyzed depth. These textural, geochemical, and chronological data support paleoenvironmental reconstruction of Drinkwater Sinkhole through the Late Quaternary.
