Abstract:
This dataset consists of a file containing the at-sea positions of Wilson's Storm-petrels (Oceanites oceanicus) along with environmental factors (distance to the nearest seamount, distance to the nearest shelf break, bed depth, sea-ice concentration and Antarctic Krill Euphausia superba habitat suitability) and R scripts. The main objective of the tracking study was to provide a first insight into the spatial ecology, particularly foraging ecology, of Wilson's Storm-petrels during their breeding season (incubation and chick-rearing phases). The environmental variables were downloaded from other datasets and matched with our GPS positions. Seamount locations were obtained from Yesson et al. 2011, PANGAEA (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.757563). Shelf break data from Amblas 2018, PANGAEA (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.890863). Bed depth data from Dorschel et al. 2022, PANGAEA (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.937574) and Antarctic Krill habitat suitability model data from Teschke et al. 2019, PANGAEA (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.899667). Sea-ice concentration data was downloaded from the University of Bremen (www.seaice.uni-bremen.de, index of AMSR2 asi daygrid swath s6250 with no land mask).
GPS loggers (model: Pathtrack Nano Fix Geo Mini), attached to adult breeding Wilson's Storm-petrels, cover the following tracking periods: 2023: 6th February to 20th of February (n = 15 individuals); 2024: 8th January to 28th of February (n = 26 individuals). Individuals were caught at their nests near the Argentine Station 'Carlini' on King George Island /25 de Mayo Island, South Shetland Islands within the ice-free area of the Potter Peninsula (62°14'S, 58°40'W). The GPS loggers, set to UTC time, took one GPS positions every 30 minutes, and complete foraging tracks (n = 57) were analysed using a movement behaviour classification based on hidden Markov models (HMMs) in the R package 'moveHMM' (Michelot et al. 2016, doi:10.1111/2041-210X.12578). For the behaviour classification, step lengths and turning angles were derived and distinguished between 'state1' (high step lengths and high directionality = transiting behaviour), 'state 2' (moderate step length and increased turning frequency = extensive search), and 'state 3' (minimal step length and highly variable directionality = intensive search). The respective R script ('movement behaviour classification GPS Wilson's Storm-petrels') is part of this dataset. The R scripts to assess whether the Antarctic Krill habitat suitability category influenced behavioural states ('ordinal logistic regression modelling of krill habitat suitability data GPS Wilson's Storm-petrels') and to assess the effect of the remaining continuous environmental variables on the behavioural states ('pairwise binomial generalised linear mixed models GPS Wilson's Storm-petrels') are also included in this dataset.
