Abstract:
This dataset contains ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profiles and topographic data collected at Punta Páramo, the southern terminus of the El Páramo gravel spit in San Sebastián Bay, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Data were acquired during a field campaign carried out between 2024-12-03 and 2024-12-13, with all GPR profiles collected on 2024-12-11, in order to characterize the internal sedimentary architecture and the surface morphology of a gravel beach-ridge plain developed under a hypertidal regime.
Nine GPR profiles totaling 3104.7 m were collected with a SIR-3000 system (Geophysical Survey Systems Inc., GSSI) equipped with a 200 MHz shielded antenna operated in common-offset mode. Trace positioning was controlled by a distance survey wheel, with a trace increment of 0.025 m (40 scans per meter), 1024 samples per trace and a total of 124,188 traces. Eight profiles were acquired perpendicular to the beach-ridge crests; one profile (Profile 4) was acquired parallel to the shoreline. The profiles are distributed across the three beach-ridge sets identified at the site: Profiles 1 to 4 in the ocean-facing set, Profiles 5 to 8 in the bay-facing set, and Profile 9 in the northern set. Individual profiles range in length from 44.4 m to 744.95 m.
Data are provided as raw records in GSSI DZT format, comprising eleven files: Profile 2 was recorded in three consecutive files, while each remaining profile corresponds to a single file. A table relating file names to profile numbers, ridge sets, profile lengths, number of traces, orientation and start and end coordinates is included. The DZT files can be read and processed with the open-source software GPRpy (Plattner, 2020). For the associated publication, the profiles were processed with GPRpy following this sequence: time-zero correction, background removal, automatic gain adjustment, time-to-depth conversion and topographic correction. A constant electromagnetic wave velocity of 0.13 m/ns was applied for time-to-depth conversion, based on published values for coarse-grained sediments and on common midpoint measurements from a comparable sand-gravel beach-ridge plain located approximately 50 km south of the study area (Montes et al., 2018).Topographic control along the GPR lines was obtained with a Trimble R8S RTK differential GPS operated in stop-and-go mode, recorded simultaneously with the radar acquisition. A total of 292 points were surveyed, with horizontal precision ranging from 0.016 m to 0.066 m (mean 0.030 m) and vertical precision from 0.019 m to 0.112 m (mean 0.044 m). These points were used for the topographic correction of the profiles and are provided as a separate table.
A digital elevation model (DEM) of the study site was generated by structure-from-motion photogrammetry from imagery acquired with Autel EVO II Pro and DJI Mavic Air 2 unmanned aerial vehicles, processed with Agisoft Metashape. The resulting DEM has a spatial resolution of 0.1 m and a vertical error of ±0.014 m, and is provided in GeoTIFF format. All coordinates are referenced to WGS 84 / UTM zone 19S (EPSG:32719).
