Abstract:
Middle Pleistocene to Holocene benthic foraminifera has been quantitatively identified (>125 μm size fraction) from the IODP core 375-U1526B in the Southwest Pacific. The core was drilled at 2888 m below sea level on the western flank of the Tūranganui Knoll Seamount, along the Hikurangi Subduction Margin, offshore the North Island of New Zealand. The core was analysed over 0.1-26.16 m (CSF-A), dated from 1-1304 ka. 143 sediment samples were analysed for benthic foraminifera, and 182 taxa were identified (species or genus), including taxa which became extinct during the Mid Pleistocene deep sea benthic foraminiferal extinction event.
Stable oxygen and carbon isotope analysis was done on the benthic foraminifera Uvigerina peregrina. In total, 142 samples were analysed over 0.1-26.16 m (CSF-A). The stable oxygen isotope data was used primarily to date the core.
The analysed grain-size data was processed by Gradistat v 9 based on the Folk and Ward Method. Sortable silt was calculated for every sample for bottom water velocity reconstruction. In total, 154 samples were analysed over 0.04-26.16 m (CSF-A)
The core 375-U1526B was scanned for XRF at 10 kV with no filter, and 30 kV with a Pd filter. The XRF data includes Ca, Rb, and Al, measured carbonate content and interpolated carbonate percentages are also included. The XRF data provides insight to the sediment provenance of the core. The core was scanned at 1 cm intervals where core was available and in good condition, in total 2240 measurements was conducted at each source energy.
