Abstract:
This dataset contains occurrence, relative abundance (%) and absolute abundance (specimens per gram of dry sediment) records of the planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina atlantica dextral from multiple Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) sites across the North Atlantic Ocean. The investigated sites include DSDP Site 94-609, ODP Sites 108-659, 172-1058, and IODP Sites 306-U1312, 306-U1313, 339-U1387, and 339-U1385 spanning transitional and subtropical regions of the North Atlantic. The records cover the Pliocene to Early Pleistocene interval at DSDP Site 94-609 and the Early Pleistocene interval at the remaining sites, encompassing a period of progressive Northern Hemisphere cooling and increasing glacial-interglacial climate variability. Neogloboquadrina atlantica specimens were identified following the taxonomic concepts of Berggren (1972) and species assignments were verified through scanning electron microscope observations of test ultrastructure following Poore and Berggren (1975). Relative and absolute abundances of the dextral morphotype were quantified according to sample preservation and material availability at each site. Age models were established using published magnetostratigraphic and stable isotope stratigraphic frameworks. The chronology of DSDP Site 108-609 is based on published magnetostratigraphy with updated geomagnetic polarity timescale ages. The chronologies of IODP Sites 306-U1312 and ODP Site 108-659 were established through correlation of benthic oxygen isotope records to the LR04 benthic isotope stack. For IODP Site 306-U1313, the planktonic oxygen isotope record of Globigerina bulloides was correlated to the high-resolution record from IODP Site 339-U1385. At IODP Site 339-U1387, age control was obtained through correlation of planktonic and benthic oxygen isotope records to published records from IODP Sites 339-U1385 and 303-U1308. We adopted previously published age models based on stable isotope records for IODP Site 339-U1385 (Hodell et al., 2023), and ODP Site 172-1058 (Billups et al., 2006; Weirauch et al., 2008). These records document the spatial and temporal evolution of N. atlantica dextral across the North Atlantic and provide the basis for evaluating changes in species distribution, abundance patterns, ecological persistence, and the timing of its regional extinction during the Late Pliocene-Early Pleistocene climate transition.
