Abstract:
This data presents paired soil profile and plant physiological–biochemical data collected from a 50-year chronosequence of artificial Haloxylon ammodendron plantations in the desert-oasis ecotone of arid northwestern China. The study uses a space-for-time substitution design with three stand ages: 20-year, 30-year, and 50-year. For each age class, three independent replicate plots were established, resulting in nine experimental plots in total.
Soil samples were collected from ten consecutive layers at 0–500 cm depth to characterize vertical variations in soil properties. The soil data includes: soil pH, salinity, salt ion concentrations (Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Cl⁻, HCO₃⁻), total nutrients (soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), available nutrients (available phosphorus, hydrolyzable nitrogen, NH₄⁺-N, NO₃⁻-N), soil moisture content, and activities of six extracellular enzymes (β-glucosidase, exo-β-1,4-glucanase, leucine aminopeptidase, urease, N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase, alkaline phosphatase). Enzyme vector analysis was used to calculate vector length and vector angle to quantify soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus limitation.
Plant samples were collected from three tissue types: green young leaves, yellow old leaves, and roots. The plant data includes tissue pH, salt ion concentrations (Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Cl⁻, HCO₃⁻), and total nutrient contents (total carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus). All measurements were conducted using standardized laboratory protocols with strict quality control. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, principal component analysis (PCA), and structural equation modeling (SEM).
This data supports mechanistic research on long-term soil salinization, nutrient imbalance, microbial resource limitation, plant physiological disorders, and degradation mechanisms of artificial sand-fixing shrubs in arid desert ecosystems.
