Abstract:
Nitrous oxide (N₂O–N) fluxes measured from automated static closed chambers in maize and potato plots in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. Fluxes were recorded at sub-daily resolution (approximately three measurement cycles per chamber per day, 45-minute closure duration) using a cavity ring-down spectrometer (Picarro G2308, Picarro Inc., USA) coupled to 12 automated chambers (50 × 50 × 15 cm internal dimensions) via a multiplexer. Data span the full annual cycle from March 2024 to March 2025, capturing the East African dry season, long and short rains and post-harvest fallow. Measurements were conducted at the University of Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya (0°34′45″N, 35°18′22″E; 2,213 m a.s.l.) on Ferralsol soils. Four nitrogen fertilisation rates were applied to maize and potato in a randomised complete block design with three replicates: maize at 50 kg N ha⁻¹, maize at 100 kg N ha⁻¹, potato at 50 kg N ha⁻¹, and potato at 100 kg N ha⁻¹. Nitrogen was applied as urea in three equal split at planting, six and thirteen weeks after planting and at planting, four and seven weeks after planting for maize and potato, respectively. Data were collected to quantify N₂O emission dynamics under contrasting fertilisation rates and crop types, derive field-based emission factors for comparison with IPCC Tier 1 defaults, and identify the environmental drivers that govern emissions these agroecosystems. Fluxes are reported in µg N₂O–N m⁻² h⁻¹. This dataset is part of a multi-variable collection archived at PANGAEA
