Abstract:
During the Polarstern cruise PS149 from July 2025 to August 2025 in the Atlantic part of the Arctic Ocean dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of the snow and ice were measured by impedance measurements at 50 MHz during 29 ice stations. Measurements were performed using the Stevens Water Monitoring Systems Hydra Probe Sensor. The cylindrical measurement region of the sensor has a length of 5.7 cm and a diameter of 3 cm. Snow and surface scattering layer (SSL) were measured by inserting the probe tines of the device either vertically or horizontally (in a snowpit), details in the "Comment" column. Ice core samples were obtained with a 9 cm corer. Then a positioning device was used to drill four 3mm holes vertically into the ice core for the Hydra Probe Sensor's central waveguide and outer rods. At what depth the ice was sampled is contained in the "Core depth [m]" column (either one depth or a range), where 0 m is the ice surface.
The sample type (snow, surface scattering layer (SSL) or ice) is denoted in the "Sample Type" column of the dataset. For all measurements a response was recorded and a repeat measurement was performed right after. The dataset also contains temperature, salinity and density measurements (all independent of the device) of the sampled snow or ice cores, these datasets are part of the VAMPIRE-2 data bibliography https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.990497. The ice cores are identifiable by the column "unique core number" corresponding to the number used in the ice core datasets of that bibliography. Note that an intercomparison of the salinometer with two others revealed a bias, which is described in the attached PDF and corrected for in the columns "Salinity corrected" . All measurements were done within the vicinity of the footprint of the onboard microwave radiometers installed for the VAMPIRE project , that is, in about 25 m distance to the port bow of Polarstern), further defined in the "Location" column. For more information about these measurements the user is referred to Chapter 3 of the cruise report.
