Abstract:
Seafloor images of undisturbed and disturbed polymetallic nodule provinces from the german (GER) and belgian (BEL) working area collected by RV SONNE's OFOS during the expedition SO295 (31.10.2022 - 23.12.2022). The main goal was to conduct an independent scientific monitoring and assessment of the environmental impacts of an industrial test of a polymetallic nodule collector vehicle in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone. The images were collected ~1.5 years after the collector trial. The OFOS is a towed underwater camera system equipped with both a high-resolution photo-camera (CANON EOS 5D Mark IV) and a high-definition video-camera (65° x 40° field of view). The cameras are mounted on a steel frame (160L x 115W x 117H cm), together with two strobe lights (Sea & Sun YS-250), three laser pointers at a distance of 40 cm from each other that were used to estimate the size of seafloor structures, four LED lights (SeaLite Sphere), a Tritech Altimeter, and a USBL positioning system (Posidonia) to track the position of the OFOS during deployments. In total, 15 OFOS deployments were carried out. The 5th OFOS deployment failed and for the first four deployments the position coordinates were inaccurate. Here we present 14 image FAIR Digital Objects (iFDOs) corresponding to each successful deployment. Each iFDO contains structured and standardized metadata per image. The actual images can be accessed through the image-handles provided in each iFDO.
