Abstract:
Measurement results of radiocarbon sampled during the Synoptic Arctic Survey-Oden 2021 cruise in the central Arctic Ocean as part of the project Ventilation and Anthropogenic Carbon in the Arctic Ocean (Snoeijs-Leijonmalm et al., 2022). Physical oceanography data by Heuzé et al. (2022). Six stations were sampled at 11 depths each, except for SO21_20-03 where one sample depth was lost onboard the vessel. The water was transferred into foil bags from Niskin bottles in an air sealed system and kept in continuous frozen storage till extraction. The data set also contains some duplicate measurements at select stations and depths. Samples were prepared at the Institute of Environmental Physics at Heidelberg. University. Radiocarbon was measured on the dissolved inorganic carbon present in the water. CO2 was extracted on a vacuum setup described in Kreuzer (2007) and further reduced to graphite as described in Unkel (2006) and Therre et al. (2021). Accelerator mass spectrometric measurement of the radiocarbon abundance took place between spring 2022 and spring 2024 at Curt-Engelhorn-Zentrum Archäometrie in Mannheim (Synal et al., 2007; Kromer et al., 2013). The radiocarbon abundances are suitable to examine isolation times of bottom water in the deep arctic basins and to track dynamic in the upper and intermediate layers.
