Abstract:
The data were derived from both uncrewed aerial vehicle images (UAV, DJI Phantom Pro P4 Multispectral for 2022-2024, and DJI Phantom Pro RGB for 2025, all with DJI RTK base station for positioning) and airborne images from the modular aerial camera system (MACS, developed by the German Aerospace Center).
Our data were acquired at a thermo-erosional gully site (CSP-F) on the central Seward Peninsula in Northwestern Alaska. The gully CSP-F is connected to a thermokarst pond basin, which drained around 20 years ago. We visited the site on 03.08.2022 and 09.09.2023 for UAV acquisition and have additional MACS data from 10.07.2021 and 01.07.2024.
For the UAV data derived DSMs and orthomosaics from the densely overlapping visible-spectrum imagery acquired during drone flights over multiple years using photogrammetric software (Agisoft metashape) for structure-from-motion (SfM) image processing, and finely co-registered them using arosics and xdem. Furthermore, we complemented the time steps with additional DSMs derived from airborne MACS by co-registering them to the UAV data.
The data provided here was part of a several year revisit campaign to monitor rapid permafrost degradation and related thaw processes. In addition, we used early-summer imagery from 2024 to derive the heights of snow remnants in the thermo-erosional gully.
