Abstract:
Water flow is the defining feature of riverine ecosystems and a driving force structuring their form and function across scales of ecological organization. While patch-scale flow directly modulates Nitrogen (N) uptake through mass transfer and community composition selection, it is unclear how patch-scale flow spatial heterogeneity influences reach-scale N-uptake. While common paradigm proposes that patch-scale flow heterogeneity increases N-uptake, we propose that the influence of heterogeneity is rather a function of the frequency distribution patch-scale flow. By using flumes, we created a gradient of flume-scale heterogeneity of patch-scale flow velocity increasing the number of bed-roughness elements and we determined flume- and patch-scale N-uptake following stable isotope 15N-NO3 tracer injections. We determined patch-scale flow heterogeneity using Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter.
