Abstract:
Ocean velocities were collected by a Nortek Group Signature 500 kHz RiverRay ADCP that was mounted on a towed catamaran (CATARA) during RV HEINCKE cruise HE667. The transducer was located at 0.3 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in single-ping, broadband mode with a bin size of 0.5 m and a blanking distance of 0.5 m. The velocity of the platform was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS) received at a Advanced Navigation GNSS antenna. Heading was obtained from the internal ADCP gyro and the GNSS gyro. Heading from ADCP's internal gyrocompass and GNSS gyro as well as navigation and motion (pitch, roll, heave) data were used by the Nortek VM acquisition software internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes as well as GNSS antenna and internal ADCP heading data. ADCP data is provided at minutely sample rate.
