Abstract:
The Swatch of No Ground (SoNG) submarine canyon links the world's largest and most populated delta (the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna river delta), with the Earth's largest deep-sea sedimentary system (the Bengal Fan). In order to investigates the near-bed sediment dynamics in the SoNG, a mooring system was deployed in the SoNG at 590 m water depth from 13 to 31 March 2024 (18-day deployment) during the SO304 cruise onboard the R/V SONNE. This mooring was equipped with a PPS4/3-24S sediment trap at 72 m above the seafloor (masf), programmed to collect one sample (one bottle) per day, with collecting area of 0.05 m2. The dry weight, settling flux, median grain size (D50), mean grain size, sorting, skewness, kurtosis, and organic carbon content of the sediment in the trap were measured at MARUM. Grain size was measured using a Beckman Coulter Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer LS 13320, after boiling the material with Na4P2O7·10H2O to disperse aggregates. Bottles 3–4, and 10–11 were pooled due to low particle mass. Total organic carbon content (TOC) was determined by acidifying ~100 mg of freeze-dried, powdered sediment with 12.5% HCl to remove the carbonate portion, followed by programmed pyrolysis on a LECO CS 744 carbon analyzer.
