Abstract:
The data presented derive from sediment core MD99-2203, collected in 1999 off Cape Hatteras as part of the IMAGES project. The 41 m-long sedimentary sequence was retrieved during leg MD114 by the R/V Marion Dufresne, equipped with a Giant Calypso corer. The primary objective was to document paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes at 35°N in the southwestern North Atlantic over the past 50,000 years, at the boundary between subtropical and subpolar gyre influences. We present published autochthonous occurrences from the Arctic and eastern North American regions of dinocyst taxa identified as reworked in quartz-rich layers.
Dinocyst preparation followed standard palynological protocols using HCl and HF. For each sample, 1.5-5.5 cm³ of fine sediment (<150 µm) was processed at an average sampling resolution of 10–20 cm. The final residues were mounted unstained in bidistilled glycerin, a mobile mounting medium that allows rotation of the cysts. Taxonomic identification and quantitative analyses of reworked dinocysts were conducted on 38 samples between 3030 and 2640 cm depth (corrected depth: 2906-2516 cm) using a Zeiss Universal III microscope at 400× magnification.
