Abstract:
Gravity core MSM101_44-3 was recovered from the St. Anns Basin on the northeastern Scotian Shelf (45°46.651′N, 58°31.967′W) at 274 m water depth during expedition MSM101 (RV Maria S. Merian). The core was sectioned into 1 m segments, split into working and archive halves, and subsampled for sedimentological analyses. Sediments consist of organic-rich, hemipelagic silty clays with varying degrees of bioturbation. Elemental composition of the bulk sediment was determined on archive halves using an Avaatec XRF core scanner. Measurements were performed at 10 kV and 30 kV with standard reference materials (SARM4, JGa-1, JR-1, KGa-1) to ensure instrument stability. For mineralogical analyses, 40 freeze-dried and homogenized samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (Bruker AXS D8 Discover), and quantitative mineral abundances were obtained using Rietveld refinement with HighScore Plus and the ICSD database. Estimated uncertainties for mineral abundances are ±10%. These datasets provide continuous elemental and mineralogical information of the Scotian Shelf sediments, supporting paleoenvironmental, sedimentological, and geochemical studies.
