Abstract:
Gravity core MSM101_44-3 was recovered from the St. Anns Basin on the northeastern Scotian Shelf (45°46.651′N, 58°31.967′W) at 274 m water depth during cruise MSM101 (June 2021) with RV Maria S. Merian. The core was sectioned into 1 m segments, split into working and archive halves, and subsampled at 5 cm intervals for sediment analyses. Planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (>150 µm fraction) were analyzed for Mg/Ca ratios and stable oxygen isotopes (δ¹⁸Oc). Mg/Ca measurements were performed using ICP-OES following oxidative and silicate-removal cleaning protocols, with quality control via reference material (ECRM 752-1). SSTMg/Ca was calculated using established calibrations, corrected for minor diagenetic effects. δ¹⁸Oc was measured on 25 specimens per sample using a Finnigan MAT 253 mass spectrometer, converted to δ¹⁸O of seawater (δ¹⁸Osw), corrected for global ice volume, and used to estimate past salinity (SSS). The reconstructed temperatures and δ¹⁸Osw primarily reflect spring–summer subsurface conditions (~20–80 m water depth) on the Scotian Shelf, supporting paleoceanographic studies of Holocene and late-glacial sedimentary environments.
