Abstract:
We compare trace metal (Mn, Co, V, Mo, U, Cd, and As) cycling in the upper ca. 5 m of the German and Belgian license areas for polymetallic nodule mining in the Clarion Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean. Considerable differences can be observed based on redox conditions, leading to Mn oxide dissolution of the solid phase as well as buried polymetallic nodules. Mobilization of metals to the pore water varies between the study sites. Samples were taken during the SO268 cruise to the German and Belgian license areas for polymetallic nodule mining in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone as part of the MiningImpact project. Sediment cores were collected with a gravity corer (GC) . Pore water was extracted by means of centrifugation prior to analyses of the sediments. Sediment samples were freeze-dried and acid pressure digested using HF and HClO4 or HF, HNO3, and HCl for the nodules. Aluminum, Fe, Mn, and V was then analyzed in the digestion solutions with an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer and Ti, Co, and Mo with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer at Constructor University Bremen.
