Abstract:
Methane seeps along active continental margins record the interaction between fluid flow, biogeochemical processes, benthic ecosystems, and tectonic forcing. This data compilation of methane seep environments from the Concepción Methane Seep Area (CSMA) on the central Chile margin (~36°S) combines seafloor imagery, multibeam bathymetry, sediment biogeochemistry, authigenic carbonate geochemistry, and U–Th chronology. The data was collected during the two legs of the research cruise SO210 in 2010 from multiple subregions within the CMSA with the aim to identify successional stages of seepage reflecting temporal variability in methane flux, carbonate precipitation, and biological colonization, potentially modulated by episodic tectonic activity such as the Maule earthquake on February 27, 2010 along the Chilean margin.
