Abstract:
Total organic carbon (TOC), carbonate and sulphur content was determined at the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Bremen, using a Leco CS744. Sample preparation involved freeze-drying, grinding, and homogenizing of the sediment. Approximately 100 mg of the sediment was weighed into a ceramic cup and combusted in a stream of oxygen using a high-frequency induction furnace. Total carbon (TC) was measured in untreated sediment while TOC content was measured in decalcified sediment treated with 12.5% HCl. Total inorganic carbon (TIC) equals the difference between TC and TOC and was used for the calculation of CaCO3, by multiplying TIC by the stoichiometric factor 8.33.
