Abstract:
New data from ODP site 811 for the Late Miocene (11 Ma)-early Pliocene (2 Ma) from the Coral Sea. This core was taken from the Queensland Plateau near an active coral reef. In this data set, we reconstruct temperature using the TEX86H biomarker to compare with previous SST records based on oxygen isotopes from the Coral Sea, which showed SSTs around 18 degrees C. In this new record, we show that SSTs were actually around 30 degrees C during the late Miocene when coral reefs were drowning. This data has been published in the following two articles: Petrick, Benjamin, Lars Reuning, Gerald Auer, Yige Zhang, Miriam Pfeiffer, and Lorenz Schwark. 2023. "Warm, Not Cold Temperatures Contributed to a Late Miocene Reef Decline in the Coral Sea." Scientific Reports 13 (1): 4015. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-31034-8.
