Abstract:
This dataset contains data used for the adaptation of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model to Arctic permafrost environments. Data were collected in and around Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada (69.2° N, 106,0° W) during the 2023 and 2024 field campaigns. The dataset includes permafrost core analyses (granulometry, gravimetric ice content, and excess ice estimates) as well as active layer samples (granulometry and soil organic matter content). These measurements are complemented by geographic information system (GIS) analysis outputs of RUSLE model factors derived from remote sensing and open regional datasets, including solar irradiance and meteorological variables (not included here, see related publication for details). The repository also contains geospatial files (.tif and .shp) representing ice-wedge polygon (IWP) density and the computed RUSLE factors in raster format. Additionally, the R code used in the analysis is provided, structured to allow factor-by-factor computation, facilitating a step-by-step workflow for reproducibility and methodological transparency. Soil samples were processed in the laboratory following standard sedimentological and geotechnical methods, while permafrost cores were sectioned and analyzed for ice structure and composition. The primary objective of this dataset is to provide high-resolution ground-truth data for calibrating and validating erosion modeling in Arctic tundra watersheds, in a context of accelerating permafrost degradation driven by climate change.
