Abstract:
Storminess reconstructions can be derived from coastal peatlands using a number of methods - including the measurement of windblown sand preserved within the cores. Here we present a decadal-resolution record of storminess covering the last 6.4 thousand years, based on analysis of a core taken from Bullsmouth Bog on Achill Island, Ireland, in 2019. A 4 m long peat core was sampled using a Russian corer from 53°59.791' ⁰N and 9°56.352' ⁰W. Storminess is reconstructed by variations in the minerogenic content (aeolian sand deposits), measured using the ignition residue (IR). We explore whether elements measured by an XRF core scanner (Br, Si, Ca) can be used to reconstruct past storminess by comparison with the IR record and measurements of peat humification. Chronological constraints were provided by AMS radiocarbon dating of 6 samples along the core.
