Abstract:
The EO4PAC_v2 dataset provides information on decadal-scale coastline position changes and the associated soil organic carbon fluxes from permafrost-dominated coastlines across the Northern Hemisphere. Coastline changes were quantified using the Landsat trend analysis method, as described in Nitze et al. (2017, 2018). Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 imagery captured by the TM, ETM+, and OLI sensors was used to analyze land–water transitions for each pixel between 2000 and 2020 along Arctic and permafrost-influenced coastlines. Pixels showing land–water changes were grouped into polygons, representing either coastal erosion or coastal accumulation. In EO4PAC_v2, erosion polygons were further enhanced by integrating topographic elevation data from two sources (an improvement over EO4PAC v1 (Irrgang et al., 2024, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.974139), which used only one): For polygons with mean DeltaDTM heights smaller then 10 m, the DeltaDTM (Pronk et al., 2024) was used. For polygons with a mean DeltaDTM height of 10 m, elevation data were derived from the Copernicus DEM (GLO30: doi:10.5270/ESA-c5d3d65). Providing elevation data for each polygon enabled the estimation of the eroded coastal volume for each polygon. To assess the impact on soil organic carbon mobilization, two carbon stock datasets - Hugelius et al. (2014) and Bartsch et al. (2016) - were incorporated. Using information from Hugelius et al. 2014, the EO4PAC_v2 dataset quantifies the amount of soil organic carbon mobilized by coastal erosion.
