Flood magnitude is divided into three levels with values from 1 to 3. The value 1 represents that the rain continued and the crops were damaged; 2 represents that the lowlands are flooded, but the uplands are undisturbed; 3 represents that highland inundation, or the infrastructure was destroyed.
In our research, the Chinese traditional month and date were replaced by the correspondent time in the Gregorian calendar. Chinese historical data always mentioned the season, but we used a range of months to refer the season in the Chinese lunar Calendar.
Historical records in our research come from two important Chinese eras: the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) and Republican China (1912–1949). During most time of the Qing Dynasty, Jinzhou prefecture administrated the geographical area covered by the Daling River Basin, where Jin County was the dominant city. The name of Jin County was inherited during the period of Republican China and People's Republic China, while its administrative level changed several times. Jin County was renamed as Linghai City in 1993. In our research, Chinese historical materials prefer to record famine, drought, and flood based on the administration area, as well as sometimes pointing to the occurrence of disasters in specific natural rivers. We considered relative area of various locations to Daling River to evaluate flood magnitude.
