Abstract:
Zooplankton samples were collected on a weekly to monthly basis in the Arctic Ocean from 2019 to 2020 with a Ring net during the MOSAiC expedition with RV Polarstern (PS122). The Ring net, with an opening of 1 m2 and a mesh size of 1000 µm, was hauled vertically from 700-1000 m depth to the surface. All Ring net samples were preserved in a 4% formaldehyde seawater solution buffered with Borax and stored at room temperature until processed in the lab. The samples were analyzed with the imaging system ZooScan (Gorsky et al. 2010), following the procedure as modified for Arctic zooplankton (Cornils et al. 2022), and all objects on the resulting images were taxonomically classified on the EcoTaxa website https://ecotaxa.obs-vlfr.fr/prj/9966. The data extracted from EcoTaxa were then used to calculate abundances, and biovolumes as well as biomasses and respiration rates that were derived from allometric relationships of the ZooScan image parameters.
