Abstract:
This project measured spectral reflectance for a variety of reef and seagrass functional groups found in Heron Reef, southern Great Barrier Reef and Saipan Lagoon, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. Shark Bay, a reef flat in Heron Reef was sampled in Jan. 2016. Two sites were sampled in Saipan Lagoon, which included a reef flat, Pau Pau, sampled in June 2016, and a seagrass community, San Roque sampled in May 2016. An ASD (Analytical Spectral Devices®) HandHeld 2 spectrometer (325-1075 nm) in an underwater housing was used with a 2 m bare fibre optical cable to take reflectance spectra of functional-groups and substrates in-situ. A flashlight was mounted to the tip of the optical cable, in cases where dim lighting reduced signal output. The tip of the fibre optic cable was held at a uniform distance from the subject, ~7 cm to collect spectra. Reflectance (R) was determined from the ratio of upwelling (Lu) to downwelling (Ld) radiance (R = Lu/Ld). Targets were measured in less than 2 m depth, and included sand substrate, coral identified to the genus level, macroalgae, calcareous algae, turf, and seagrass identified to species level.
