Minimum DEPTH, sediment/rock: 0.64 m * Maximum DEPTH, sediment/rock: 3.08 m
Event(s):
SHE_IV (Lough Sheeauns) * Latitude: 53.557100 * Longitude: -10.074680 * Elevation: 25.0 m * Recovery: 3 m * Method/Device: Livingstone corer (LIVC) * Comment: This peat core was taken 33 m to the east of L. Sheeauns. Exploratory pollen analytical investigations only were carried out in the context of an undergraduate project (Keane 1989). Geology: Mainly schist. On a geological divide; fertile soils to north; less fertile to south where there is a thin covering of blanket bog is widespread. Archaeology: High concentration of megaliths (tombs and a standing stone alignment). Basin size: Core SHE IV taken near the southern side of the outflow channel (drain; this has been deepened), 33 m to the east of the lake edge. Sampling in field: Top m using a gouge corer; sampled to 310 cm using 5 cm diameter Livingstone corer in 1 m drives. Depth of data collection: 1987 (best estimate). Stratigraphy: peat (partly woody) with silt at base. Length of core: 64-258 m. Spans from ca. AD 500 to early Holocene (short LG sequence in final drive, i.e. 5-6 m; not analysed).
Comment:
Pollen analyst: Sinéad Keane. Palaeoenvironmental Research Unit, NUI Galway, Galway, Ireland. Sampling density: variable; mainly 8 cm intervals. No. of spectra: 90. 442-402: continuous sampling. Lycopodium spore suspension of know concentration added; acetolysis, mounted in glycerine. Cereal-type pollen differentiated using Beug (1961) criteria (37 um taken as cutoff point; but only pollen grains 40 um and greater included in cereal-type). Pollen nomenclature generally follows Moore et al. 1991. <1 = recorded outside the pollen counts (most samples searched for additional taxa). Distinction between Myrica and Corylus not made; combined counts given. Charcoal particles ≥37 µm counted during routine pollen counting
