Abstract:
Results of exploratory pollen analytical investigations and LOI of a peat deposit from the L. Sheeauns basin are reported. The investigations complement the detailed investigations (profile SHE III) from the lake itself.
There are no 14C dates. Features that enable an approximate chronology to be attached include the rise of Alnus (Boreal/Atlantic transition) and the final decline of Pinus (c. 3000 BP). The profile was published in Molloy and O'Connell 1991.

Event(s):
SHE_IV (Lough Sheeauns) * Latitude: 53.557100 * Longitude: -10.074680 * Elevation: 25.0 m * Recovery: 3 m * Method/Device: Livingstone corer (LIVC) * Comment: This peat core was taken 33 m to the east of L. Sheeauns. Exploratory pollen analytical investigations only were carried out in the context of an undergraduate project (Keane 1989). Geology: Mainly schist. On a geological divide; fertile soils to north; less fertile to south where there is a thin covering of blanket bog is widespread. Archaeology: High concentration of megaliths (tombs and a standing stone alignment). Basin size: Core SHE IV taken near the southern side of the outflow channel (drain; this has been deepened), 33 m to the east of the lake edge. Sampling in field: Top m using a gouge corer; sampled to 310 cm using 5 cm diameter Livingstone corer in 1 m drives. Depth of data collection: 1987 (best estimate). Stratigraphy: peat (partly woody) with silt at base. Length of core: 64-258 m. Spans from ca. AD 500 to early Holocene (short LG sequence in final drive, i.e. 5-6 m; not analysed).
