Abstract:
Multiproxy analyses (pollen and geochemistry) were carried out on a lake sediment core (pollen spectra from 52-684 cm; 106 spectra) from L. Namackanbeg, a small, now largely infilled lake, 4.6 km north of Spiddal, Connemara. The record spans most of the Holocene. The local bedrock is granite. Though glaciated in the last glaciation, there is little drift and blanket bog dominates. There is a small semi-natural Atlantic oak woodland in Boliska River valley to the west (Kirby and O'Connell 1982. J Life Sci (RDS) 4: 73-96).
The profile records early Holocene woodland development (mainly pine, oak and hazel). The mid Holocene Elm Decline (but no Neolithic Landnam) is recorded and that is followed by a pronounced peak in Taxus (25.6%).
Inwash of organic-rich soils in the late Holocene disturbs the pollen record and results in reversals in two 14C dates in the upper part of the profile.
Geochemical data are also available for the core (63 samples).

Lake has largely filled-in since early 20C; now a Schwingmoor; there are effectively 2 small basins; core taken in larger northern basin. Cored from a platform supported by sedge-rich vegetation where probing revealed the thickest sediments. Coring location close to where Late-glacial cores (NMK II) were subsequently taken.
