Abstract:
The realization that ridgecrest hydrothermal activity is more common along the faster spreading centers of the Pacific Ocean than along the slowly spreading Mid- Atlantic Ridge has given rise to a generally accepted correlation between the intensity of this activity and seafloor spreading rate. Knowledge of seafloor hydrothermal activity is essential to our understanding of the oceanic cycling of elements, and an understanding of the history of hydrothermal activity is important to ocean paleochemistry and many other aspects of the history of the Earth and the oceans. Leg 92 was undertaken primarily to determine the nature and history of basalt-seawater (or hydrogeology) interactions at and on the flanks of the East Pacific Rise (EPR).

Comment:
From 1983 until 1989 NOAA-NCEI compiled the NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database from journal articles, technical reports and unpublished sources from other institutions. At the time it was the most extended data compilation on ferromanganese deposits world wide. Initially published in a proprietary format incompatible with present day standards it was jointly decided by AWI and NOAA to transcribe this legacy data into PANGAEA. This transfer is augmented by a careful checking of the original sources when available and the encoding of ancillary information (sample description, method of analysis...) not present in the NOAA-MMS database.
