Total peak areas of 17-, 10-, and 7-A clay minerals are shown. Typical detrital terrigenous clay from North Pacific - Bering Sea area is about 80 to 125 cm**2. This parameter establishes that ash layers have little clay. For X-ray amorphous materials distinction between opaline silica (opal-A) and glass is based on morphology of X-ray curves and on thin sections.
