Comment:
A minimum thermometer was exposed for terrestrial radiation from November 16, 1882, to the closing of the station, and read every day at Washington midnight. It was laid upon a board securely fixed upon the surface of the ground, and a box was provided with which it could be covered during snow storms, to prevent injury to the thermometer in digging it out of a snowdrift. Snow storms or drift of snow of course prevented observations with this thermometer.
On January 14:,1883, the Yale special minimum thermometer, No. 7 (carbon disulphide), was exposed beside this in its case, but was destroyed on January 25th by the Eskimo dogs, which gnawed oft the end containing the bulb, attracted probably by the varnish on the case. Time = Washington Mean Time (correction for mean local time -5h 17m). Temperature were given in degress Fahrenheit, which has been converted to degress Celsius by Tc = (Tf - 32) * 0.555556.
