https://www.pangaea.de/ information publisher tableDigital Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is a condensed aromatic fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and an important component of the marine carbon cycle. Hydrothermal systems have been suggested as a potential source of DBC to the deep ocean, but the mobilization and origin of DBC in organic-rich hydrothermal sediments remain poorly constrained. This dataset contains compound-specific stable carbon isotope compositions (δ13C) of benzene pentacarboxylic acid (B5CA), a BPCA oxidation product used to characterize dissolved black carbon (DBC), from hot-water Soxhlet extracts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) of deep subsurface sediments collected during IODP Expedition 385 in the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California). DBC was characterized using benzene polycarboxylic acids (BPCAs). Benzene pentacarboxylic acid (B5CA) was isolated chromatographically for compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis. The δ13C composition of B5CA was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to isotope ratio mass spectrometry (HPLC-IRMS) and is reported in per mil (‰) relative to Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB). Only δ13C values of B5CA are reported because B6CA peaks could not be sufficiently separated from the analytical background for unambiguous carbon isotope measurements.
