https://www.pangaea.de/ information publisher tableDigital Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is a condensed aromatic fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and an important component of the marine carbon cycle. Hydrothermal systems have been suggested as a potential source of DBC to the deep ocean, but the mobilization and origin of DBC in organic-rich hydrothermal sediments remain poorly constrained. This dataset contains benzene polycarboxylic acid (BPCA)-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) concentrations from porewater and water-extractable hot-water Soxhlet extracts of deep subsurface sediments collected during IODP Expedition 385 in the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California). Sample handling and the preparation and characterization of porewater and hot-water Soxhlet extracts have been described previously (Teske et al., 2021; Knoke et al., 2025). DBC was quantified using the benzene polycarboxylic acid method. Methanolic SPE-DOM extracts were oxidized with nitric acid, and the resulting BPCAs were quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). Benzene pentacarboxylic acid (B5CA) and benzene hexacarboxylic acid (B6CA) were considered for DBC quantification, and DBC concentrations were calculated according to Stubbins et al. (2015). The dataset includes B5CA and B6CA concentrations, B6CA/B5CA ratios, calculated DBC concentrations, and operationally defined hot-water-extractable DBC normalized to sediment total organic carbon content. completed Teske, Andreas P
