https://www.pangaea.de/ information publisher tableDigital Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is a condensed aromatic fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and an important component of the marine carbon cycle. Hydrothermal systems have been suggested as a potential source of DBC to the deep ocean, but the mobilization and origin of DBC in organic-rich hydrothermal sediments remain poorly constrained. This dataset contains data from heating experiments performed to investigate the temperature-dependent mobilization of dissolved black carbon (DBC) from marine and terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) reference materials under controlled aqueous heating conditions. The experiments were conducted with solid-phase extracted (SPE) marine DOM from North Equatorial Pacific Intermediate Water (NEqPIW), sampled and isolated at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) as described by Green et al. (2014), and Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter (SRNOM), a terrestrial DOM reference material provided by the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) and fisrt described by Serkiz & Perdue (1990). The reference materials were dissolved in ultrapure water and afterwards subjected to temperature treatments of 25, 80, 100, and 180 °C. DBC was determined using the benzene polycarboxylic acid (BPCA) method after Dittmar et al. (2008) and Wagner et al., (2017). BPCAs were quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), and DBC concentrations were calculated from benzene pentacarboxylic acid (B5CA) and benzene hexacarboxylic acid (B6CA) concentrations according to Stubbins et al. (2015). The dataset includes benzene tetracarboxylic acid (B4CA), B5CA, and B6CA concentrations, BPCA ratios, and calculated DBC concentrations for the different temperature treatments. completed Seidel, Michael
