Sediment samples were collected along the hydrothermally impacted Rainbow valley in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge using a multicorer during RV Meteor cruise M176/2 in September 2021. The sediment was sliced shortly after retrieval and stored at 4 °C until processing. A total of ~500 mg wet sediment was weighed in a centrifuge tube and subject to a sequential leaching procedure. At each step of the leaching procedure, the sediment was reacted with a different solution, vortexed, and shaken for pre-determined time and temperature. The pH of the leaching solutions was modified to the target pH. The remaining sediment was separated from the solution using centrifugation. The solution was then filtered using a 0.2 µm PES filter into an acid cleaned polypropylene tube. To minimize cross-contamination between the steps, we added deionized water to the tubes, centrifuged and decanted the water between steps. The five steps of the sequential leaching were: 1) 1 M NH4NO3 at pH 7 at room temperature for 30 minutes; 2) 1 M of sodium acetate adjusted to pH 5 at room temperature for 1 hour; 3) 0.5 M NH2OH∙ HCl at pH 2.5 at room temperature for 30 minutes; 4) 30% H2O2 heated to 80 °C for 3 hours; 5) 0.1 M Na2CO3 heated to 85 °C for 20 minutes. The volume of solution used in steps 1-4 was 25 mL and increased to 40 mL in step 5. Metal concentrations in the leachates were determined using an Element-XR high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). Calibration curves were prepared separately for each leaching step by additions of a mixture prepared from Inorganic Ventures multi-element solutions into the respective leaching solution in order to matrix-match the standards and samples. ** For all details see the full metadata description at "https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.995901"! ** MESS-4 CRM is reference material, see https://nrc-digital-repository.canada.ca/eng/view/object/?id=8a3fd39a-c068-4ce0-820c-d08cf742a20a
