<md:abstract>Estuarine sediments are critical zones for element cycling between land and ocean, where redox oscillation driven by unsteady sedimentation amplifies the role of iron (Fe) as a reversible regulator for the benthic cycling of trace elements. The research involved simulating reoxygenation conditions after anaerobic incubation, followed by analyzing the geochemical changes in aqueous phase samples. Iron concentrations were measured spectrophotometrically, while major and trace element compositions were determined using ICP-OES and ICP-MS. In the dataset, the elements dynamics in the microbially mediated labile Fe transformation under variable redox conditions were reported.
Sediment samples were collected at three sites in the East China Sea during a field trip to Chongming Island, Shanghai (November 21st, 2024), and a cruise with R/V Bo Hai Ke from July 5th to 10th, 2023(NORC2023-02). Sample of S1 was collected from the upper <1 cm of coastal sediment during low tide. Samples of S2 and S3 were collected with a box sampler. Surface sediments (depth < 1 cm) were scraped on board and stored at 4 °C until further processing.
Sediments from the Changjiang estuary land-ocean transect were autoclaved at 121°C for 20 min to eliminate indigenous microbes. Incubations were performed in an anoxic N₂ glovebox using ASW medium buffered with 25 mmol/l HEPES, with 20 mM glucose as electron donor, and adjusted to pH 7.8. Sterilized sediment was added to 2 g L⁻¹, and Ferrimonas balearica was inoculated to 2×10⁸ cells ml. A molybdate (20 mol/lM) treatment was included to inhibit sulfate reduction. After anaerobic incubation, reoxygenation was simulated by 2-day air exposure. Samples were then centrifuged and filtered for analysis.</md:abstract>
