Abstract:
This dataset has been created as a comparative dataset for assessment of satellite-derived sea surface height anomaly performed by Pisareva et al. (in preparation), and it is an extension of a previously published dataset (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.949695). Time series of steric height (Steric_h) and bottom pressure equivalent height (BPEH) are computed from data at three moorings (A, B, D) deployed in the Beaufort Sea. Original data were collected between 2003 and 2024 in the framework of the Beaufort Gyre Exploration Program (BGEP), based at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in collaboration with researchers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the Institute of Ocean Sciences (https://www2.whoi.edu/site/beaufortgyre/). Time series of Steric_h and BPEH are respectively computed from moored temperature and salinity data (from McLane Moored Profilers) and ocean bottom pressure records. Temperature and salinity are linearly interpolated between the shallowest measurement (60 m) and the deepest measurement (500 m for moorings A and B and 1000 m for mooring D) onto a regular pressure grid with vertical spacing of 2 m. Constant extrapolation is performed above the shallowest measurement and no extrapolation is performed below the deepest measurement. Profiles of temperature and salinity are converted into density profiles using the Gibbs Sea Water Oceanographic Toolbox (McDougall & Barker, 2011). Seric height changes are then calculated by vertically integrating density profiles, and referenced to the 2003-2024 mean. Bottom pressure records are detided using the Matlab routine t_tide (Pawlowicz et al., 2002) and linear trends are removed for each deployment to account for instrumental drifts. Time series are built by averaging measurements at monthly time steps.
