<gco:CharacterString>This study reveals how rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) cycle through an ocean margin system, clarifying the mechanisms that govern benthic REY fluxes and the preservation of Nd isotope compositions (εNd) in authigenic sediment phases. This dataset contains rare earth element and yttrium (REY) and manganese (Mn) concentrations of bottom seawater and pore water from the Mauritanian margin.
Samples were collected during cruise M182 in 2022. Seawater samples were taken with NISKIN bottles attached to a CTD water sampling carousel or a towed X-tended Ocean Floor Observation System (XOFOS). Samples were filtered using 0.8/0.2 µm Acropak capsule filters. Pore waters for Nd isotope samples were sampled and pooled from several MUC liners. MUC supernatant bottom water, the 0-4 cm layer and 4-25 cm layer were sampled and pooled without using a glove bag. Sediments were centrifuged and the supernatant (i.e., the pore water) and the MUC bottom water were filtered through 0.2 µm polyethersulfone (PES) syringe filters. Water samples were preserved by acidification to ~ pH 2 with concentrated distilled HCl. High-resolution samples from 160MUC and 172MUC were sampled in a glove bag, centrifuged and filtered through 0.2 µm cellulose acetate syringe filters under argon atmosphere and acidified with 30 µL suprapure HNO3 per 3 mL sample.
All Nd isotope large volume and seawater samples were preconcentrated offline using a seaFAST (Elemental Scientific Inc., Nebraska, USA) with a 10 mL sample loop and using a NOBIAS PA-1 resin column. Samples were spiked with 100 ppt Tm and In to monitor yields and all REY and Mn were Tm corrected at the end of the data evaluation. Correction was usually within 10-15%. Preconcentrated samples were measured on a Thermo Fisher Element HR-ICP-MS (GEOMAR, Kiel) coupled to a CETAC Aridus 2 desolvating nebulizer for increased sensitivity and decreased oxide formation. Mn for the high resolution pore water samples was measured without preconcentration using a quadrupole ICP-MS (Agilent Technologies 7500 Series; GEOMAR, Kiel) in helium mode to reduce polyatomic interferences.</gco:CharacterString>
