from core tops (e.g. recent sediments) off the coast of western North America, spanning a latitudinal range of 20 to 60 degrees north. The dataset also includes chain length metrics like average chain length and carbon preference index. These data were collected to evaluate the degree of correlation between modern sedimentary leaf wax hydrogen isotopes and observed precipitation isotopes in a latitudinal range of 20 to 60 degrees north along the coast of western North America. Second, the data were collected to evaluate whether leaf wax hydrogen and carbon isotopes reflect large-scale gradients in ecological and climatological variables. Samples were processed by standard methods for biomarker extraction, purification and quantification, and isotopes were measured via gas chromatograph-isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Results of this study showed that a major transition in leaf wax hydrogen isotopic composition occurs at the latitude of the east Pacific storm track.</description></descriptions><geoLocations><geoLocation><geoLocationBox><westBoundLongitude>-143.15</westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude>-110.19</eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude>23.11</southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude>59.183</northBoundLatitude></geoLocationBox></geoLocation></geoLocations><fundingReferences><fundingReference><funderName>Alfred P.
