Abstract:
Hourly surface dissolved methane (CH₄) dynamics in an upwelling bay (Coliumo, 36.5°S, central Chile) were measured using a high-resolution buoy-based system to discern short term CH₄ variability in term of frequencies/periods and variance. Data was taken in a bay subjected to coastal upwelling off central Chile. Methane, temperature, and salinity sensors were mounted at a depth of 1.5 m on a coastal oceanographic buoy belonging to the Coastal Observation Program of the Department of Oceanography at the University of Concepción. Data recorded every hour during an upwelling period (September 2024-February 2025) are presented. Temperature and salinity time series were obtained with an RBR Duo3 (September 2024 to January 2025) and HydroCAT (January to February 2025), and the methane was recorded with a CONTROS HydroC™ CH4 Gen. III compact with 5P-pump. Sensors acurracy were ±0.002°C and ± 0.003 mS/cm for temperature and conductivity, and ± 2 µatm or 3% of the reading for methane, with a response time between 55 min (4°C) and 50 min (14°C). Due to a malfunction of the RBR salinity sensor, these values were recalculated based on the Practical Salinity Scale 1978 (PSS-78) (UNESCO, 1981), based on conductivity (mS/cm), temperature (°C ITS-90), and pressure (dbar), using HydroCAT values as a salinity reference.
